of the divisional and graduate deans. In its assessment of colleges and
universities for 2000, U.S. News and World Report named UC Santa Cruz the 31st
best public campus in the country. In another survey conducted by U.S. News and
World Report (1995), UCSC was ranked 13th among U.S. universities for its
commitment to undergraduate teaching. And, a National Research Council survey
(1995) ranked two of UCSC's doctoral programs--astronomy/astrophysics and

The City of Monterey
occupies a most important place in California history. It became the seat of
California government in 1849 when our first State Constitution was drawn up at
Colton Hall but it was in 1904 that Monterey High's history began. In the fall
of that year, forty students and four teachers met in the top floor of the
grammar school building located on the area we now call the "lower campus," and
classes began for Monterey High School.

Parent-Teachers-Students Association, the athletics boosters (Breakers) and the

Remodeling and Renovations >Damp Environments
If you are a typical home buyer, you are likely to eliminate a home with a basement that has water stains or mildew on the walls or floors. Before you completely rule out a home that you really like because of a water issue, you should get an expert's opinion.
A basement can often be dried out easily. A new set of gutters, repairs to a plugged up outdoor drain, or simple regrading of soil around the foundation may solve the problem. A home inspector or water-proofing company can give you an idea about what is causing the dampness, as well as how much you will have to pay to waterproof the area. Sometimes the home owner will consider negotiating the repair costs with the buyers, especially if the alternative is no offer at all. If the house is a "fixer-upper" and priced accordingly, you could get an excellent value that more timid buyers might pass up.
